Crowns and Bridges Q & A
What is a crown?

A crown is a prosthetic cap that is custom-built for your tooth. Dr. Suarez bonds it to the top of your tooth, covering up everything above the gumline. There are a number of reasons to get a crown, including to:

* Restore a tooth that is severely decayed or has too many fillings
* Protect an injured tooth from further damage
* Replace a tooth that’s cosmetically unattractive
* Strengthen a tooth after a root canal

Dr. Suarez can also seal a crown to a dental implant when you’re replacing a missing tooth.

Crowns and Bridges Q & A
What is a crown?

What materials are used to make crowns?

There are a variety of materials that are suitable for crowns, including cast gold, silver amalgam, and porcelain.

Healthy Dental Expressions is proud to offer zirconium crowns for its patients. Zirconium crowns are very durable and able to withstand the great biting pressure in the back of your mouth, making them an excellent solution for restoring a molar.

They also look just like your natural teeth, which makes them suitable for capping your more visible teeth as well.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a device that Dr. Suarez bonds to your smile in order to replace a missing tooth or teeth. It’s made up of a fake tooth (or pontic) that’s attached to crowns on one or both sides.

Dr. Suarez then bonds those crowns to your abutment teeth (the teeth that are adjacent to your missing teeth). Once in place, the pontic bridges the gap between teeth, hence its name.

If your abutment teeth aren’t suitable for crowns, Dr. Suarez might recommend a Maryland bonded bridge, which attaches to your mouth with a metal or ceramic framework that bonds to the backside of your abutment teeth.

What’s the procedure for getting crowns and bridges?

To make room for your restoration, Dr. Suarez first shaves some enamel from any teeth that are going to be receiving crowns. If you’re getting a single crown, he removes enamel from the tooth that’s being treated, and if you’re getting a bridge, he removes enamel from your abutment teeth.

Then, he takes a detailed impression of your mouth, and uses it to fabricate your crown or bridge so it’s a custom fit for your smile. You wear a temporary crown or bridge while you wait for a lab to make your permanent one, which typically takes a couple of weeks. Once your permanent crown or bridge is ready, he checks that it fits comfortably, then seals it in place.
